I have read all the articles. It really upsets me to think that these boys did it because they were bored. Last nite around 9pm i heard a lot of noise went out to look there stood 4 boys around 9-11 yrs old knocking over everyones garbage cans as well as opening mail boxes. They took off after seeing me but i heard them back around 11, were are their parents maybe working or on the next block doing the same Donna

I expect a little larceny from a boy. Maybe that is part of the problem the tipping outhouses cutting trees down in the road on Halloween, were almost expected of us as kids. If you got caught you paid the price. You were stacking hey in Mr Browns barn or digging a new outhouse. (I never got caught by the way) I always felt guilty enough on my own to make amends with out having to be told. I think where it changed is the penalty for getting caught is no longer there. The expectation of a little larceny is there but now there is no penalty for it. You get bailed out once by your parents, you will get bailed out twice, three times forever. Kids are taught to ignore the rules and to the lieing and cheating are ok if you don't get caught. I was at the movie theater the other night when a woman walked in with 3 kids. She told my friend the manager that she was at the theater the week before and in the middle of the movie her water broke and had to go to the hospital. Wanted free tickets to see a new movie. She had no ticket stub showed no signs of having been pregnent and had no baby. Those kids are learning at an early age that lies and cheating and stealing are ok if it gets you what you want. Parent everywhere you look today are teach the kids to take what you want when you want.

TAMPA, Fla. - A 7-year-old boy beat his baby half-sister to death with his fists, feet and a two-by-four because he was jealous of the attention the girl was receiving and because she would not stop crying, police said Wednesday. The State Attorney's Office is deciding whether to file charges against the boy in an attack that rattled even veteran homicide detectives.
"The veteran detectives who worked on this case have never seen a case with someone as young as a 7-year-old show so much violence and so little remorse," Tampa police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said.
The attack occurred May 22 in Tampa, where the boy had been visiting his father. Seven-month-old Jayza Laney Simms was dead on arrival at the hospital where her parents rushed her.
The boy confessed to killing his sister a week later when detectives confronted him with the evidence, McElroy said.
The unidentified boy was not taken into custody and is living with his mother while prosecutors make their decision on whether to charge him.
Police said the father and his girlfriend were outside visiting with neighbors when the boy came to them about midnight on the night of the attack and told them the baby was "bleeding." They found the girl with a bloody nose and said she wasn't breathing.
The Hillsborough County State Attorney's Office did not immediately return telephone calls for comment Wednesday.

Ok...remember I am a single mom, as I post this....
I think everyone has a point, kids do need discipline, they need to learn to be responsible for their actions, and there are consequences to their actions, they need to learn self control, they need positive role models... but I think a large portion of the problem is that the family unit is so fractured. You have mom's house and dad's house, and sibling groups a, b and c... kids are lost in the shuffle, and as society in general we are failing our kids. Stan is right that teaching them martial arts is a positive tool, but then so is teaching them basketball, playing baseball or swimming, Girl and Boy Scouts, and so on... but NOTHING is as important as one on one with your kids. these messages about simply learning to talk with your kids are very true. But in the end, you still have kids that grow up in the worst circumstances who become great people, and kids with it all and wonderful parents who end up being a scurge of civilization. All we can do is try our very best.
But FIVE kids knew about this, besides the perps... There are some parents out there who damn well aren't doing their job. And then they go on the news and try to say how good their kid is... YO! Your FOURTEEN YEAR OLD, just repeatedly beat a guy...going back 4 times, until the guy was dead....that is in NO WAY a good kid.

Just like the tampa story notice no one was at home at the time the parent and girlfriend were next door. Kids are no longer first on the priority list as they once were. Like you said the one on one time is almost a thing of the past. A kid has to have somewhere in his life a role model. Someone that they can look up to and model their lives after. With that even in the worst of circumstances a kid who some might think is never going to make it is going to be great. JMayo

2 more teens arrested Friday. 5 against 1, they make me want to puke.
I saw the service for Michael Roberts on TV. A lot of kind people were there. He didn't deserve going out that way. These murderous punks aren't going to be bored for a very, very long time.

Homeless Case:No Death Penalty « Thread Started on Today at 7:52pm » -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Prosecutors told Circuit Judge Joseph Will today that they will not seek the death penalty for Jeffrey Spurgeon and Justin Stearns, both 18, who are charged with murder in the fatal beating of a Holly Hill homeless man. Both remain held without bond at the Volusia County Branch Jail. The murder trial is expected to begin in February. I haven't seen any follow on stories about these young men and would be interested in knowing the circumstances of not seeking the death penalty. Aren't these a couple of the kids who went back and beat on this poor man at least five times with sticks and jumped on him?? Something stinks here, I think! I really don't know why he lived in the woods Phoenix. According to his brother, he just decided to bail out of society in earlier articles I read.
The people that are moving from Royal Oak Trailer Park will hopefully get a plan. I'm trying to find out more details on their plight.

This makes me want to puke. I just don't get it. Beating suspect first told police he 'watched' By JAY STAPLETON Staff Writer Last update: August 10, 2005 DAYTONA BEACH -- Warren Messner first told investigators he "just watched" when a 53-year-old homeless man was beaten to death by a group of teens in the woods near Holly Hill. But during about a half hour with two sheriff's investigators after his arrest on June 10, the 290-pound eighth-grader shown on video with long curly hair implicated himself further in the May 25 beating death of Michael Eugene Roberts. Messner, 15, admitted he jumped on a log he helped lay over Michael Robert's ribs "like two or three times," according to the transcript of a taped interview released Tuesday by the State Attorney's Office. The tape and transcript were released a day after defense and media attorneys agreed to a pending court order regarding how some information from the investigation is released to the public. Under that order, crime scene photos and statements made by the defendants to police not yet released would remain sealed for 45 days. A judge must review such evidence and make a ruling before it's released. In the taped interrogation, which Messner's defense lawyer tried to have thrown out because Messner asked for his parents or an attorney to be present, Messner tells investigators he doesn't understand the word "coercion." "Coercion means trickery. Have we tried to trick or force you in any way to make this statement at any time, OK?" sheriff's investigator R.S. Willis said. "You still want to talk to us?" "Yes," Messner replies, before signing a consent form. Under questioning, Messner told investigators that Chris Scamahorn, 15, Jeffery Spurgeon, 18, and Justin Stearns, 18, came and got him at his house about 9 p.m., and he was present for the third and final beating of Roberts. A fifth teen who has been charged with aggravated battery, Phi Huyhn, 15, was not there that time, Messner said. Messner, who has a record including arrests for battery and criminal mischief, according to court records, said he tried to stop the beating after he saw the others hit the man in the head with logs. "I said, 'stop man, you all are gonna kill him,' " Messner told the investigators, before he said Scamahorn kicked Roberts in the head. After that, he told them Spurgeon hit Roberts in the head with a log, and Roberts made a sound "like he was snoring." He said Spurgeon told him to jump on the log -- which he admitted doing -- " 'cause they didn't want me to be the only one that didn't do nothing." Roberts, whose body was found three days after the beating, suffered fractured ribs, a fractured skull and defensive wounds to his arms, according to prosecutors. Asked why he didn't call for help, Messner said: "I didn't know what to do. I was scared that one of them was going to kill me or something." Messner and the others, except Huynh, are being held without bail at the Volusia County Branch Jail and could face up to life in prison. Their trial is expected to begin early next year. jay.stapleton@news-jrnl.com
