Ok, for two months I have been on a serious healthy eating kick, and have discovered that you can teach an old dog new tricks. Some of the foods I had had rarely or never before have become staples now, and I tell ya, it's worth expanding the horizons a bit. I had a fairly serious sugar and salt habit that I thought would be with me forever. Now I have almost NO cravings.
New foods I can't believe I didn't try or like before
Greek yogurt- much richer and creamier. Pepitas- pumpkin seeds, but I think the outer chewy shell is taken off (in Publix organic produce section and not expensive, and a great source of iron) Jicama- I had had it in restaurants, but wow is it tasty. So far have only found it at the Flagler Beach Publix . It makes an awesome slaw, great source of fiber, some vitamins Quinoa- an ancient grain that is a rare complete protein. There is also quinoa pasta, which is really rich and tasty, and just a bit will do. A great item for vegetarians.
I'm also roasting all my vegetables rather than steaming. Roasted asparagus tastes like french fries!
Food is now my new favorite thing. And I've lost ten pounds.

Xela, have you tried culantro? It's very much like cilantro but flatter, bigger leaves- much easier to cut up.
Did you know you can pop sorghum? and toast quinoa in a pan?
The healthy eating thing is more expensive, but only at first, when the staples are being accumulated. Plus there's a lot of savings on meat- eating much less frequently and smaller portions-- plus not getting Ruffles and chicken wings (these were my demons) saves quite a bit.
Multi-grain Cheerios- although I'm trying to get all my nutrients from whole foods, and MG cheerios are fortified, if I have about a half a cup every other day, I totally don't have to take a vitamin. I'm gettin' it all from the food! (takes a lot of food logging, though).

I have to make myself like oatmeal before I can go with the steel cut...right? I've been trying.
I have to go back and check the recipe, but I think you do the quinoa rinse (that soapy flavor) first, then toast them in a pan before you cook them, but let me check. I like the quinoa pasta better right now because it's a lot less work, and I don't have a good strainer for the quinoa. The holes are too big.
The sorghum I think you just put in a paper bag in the microwave, have not tried it yet.
Oh, my other favorite new thing, making pita chips by cutting up one large whole wheat pita and a quick spray of olive oil spray (another favorite thing) and in the oven at 400 for a few minutes. They taste good even without salt, and pita bread has some iron in it. Good for dipping in hummus, which I also never used to eat and which I have almost every day.
Pretty much the only thing I eat almost every day now that I USED to eat a lot of is avocado.

I make my own hummus...it's much tastier (and less expensive) than store-bought!

yeah...hummus is great with wheat thins, veggie sticks, pita bread, etc....and I like to make mine REALLY garlic-y.
You should tryit, it's SOOOOOOOooooo good!!
