Because of Brian
As most of you know, my son died in an accident October 7, 2008. This year marks the fifth year of his passing. Every year, since 2008, with the help of friends and family, I sponsor Christmas for impoverished children in Brian’s name. The charity is called “Because of Brian.” To date, 25 Christmas’s have been given to children. It starts out with one or two projects every year and grows.
This year starts with two children, a boy and girl, from Daytona. Their father was killed in a car accident and their mother was severely injured and hospitalized for three months. The boy, Rodney, is 12 and the girl, London, is 5. I don’t have their “wish list” yet – I should be receiving that soon. I received the information about them from the “Begin Again” Traumatic Grief Counseling Center.
The second project I am adding is the purchase of shoes for an impoverished church in Bunnell. I sent several pair there last year and the children were so excited – one little boy ran around all day with the tags still on the shoes so everyone would know they were new.
I also sponsor a child from one of the local children’s homes.
And I send gifts to a group in Palm Coast called “Project Share.” It is run by a woman named Roseanne Stocker and she is amazing. She started the project after passing through Pierson one year and seeing how the impoverished migrant workers live. It has grown to over 1100 children with no age limits on who they support and they serve Flagler County and Pierson. They need everything.
And I will have more families before Christmas arrives. I will pass along information about them as it happens.
I normally launch Brian’s charity on the anniversary of his death, but this year I am launching it in a different way, so this email comes to you a little early. Bob Evans is hosting a charity day for “Because of Brian”….it is all day Monday, on the anniversary of Brian’s death. I am off on Monday (taking my son to the airport), but will be at Bob Evan’s by 6:00 if anyone wants to join me then. (or you can go anytime on Monday). Attached is a coupon to take with you if you go…they attach it to the receipt.
Aside from the dinner, I will post the “wish list” when I get it. I primarily get donations of cash (checks made out to Barb Witt) or items from the wish lists if you prefer to buy on your own. When the items are ready to go to the children, I will post pics of them. You can access the page for the charity on Facebook….it’s called “Because of Brian.” I’d love it if you’d “like” it and share it. www.facebook.com/pages/Because-of-Brian/118755288232537
This is not a 501C3 Charity. I haven’t taken on that expense or the challenges of obtaining one because I only do this project at Christmas and don’t want to take any money from it. I keep complete records of incoming donations and monies spent.
I appreciate any support I can get and so do the children who are recipients of “Because of Brian.” Please consider even a small donation – every little bit helps. It’s my way of keeping his spirit alive and bringing some joy to the lives of a few kids who deserve a happy Christmas.
Thank you.
