So, this morning after I rolled out of bed I fed the dogs and then took the two fast eaters (my border collie, Izzy, and new puppy, Juno) out with me to feed and water the chickens before hubby left for work.
The border collie is only 2, so for all intents and purposes still a puppy as border collies go. And she's FAST! Before I could get off the front porch with the puppy she was down by our barn in the tall grass chasing something across the property. I called for her and she immediately returned. We were suddenly graced with a smell like none I had ever smelled before. Burned tires, melting plastic, something's on fire smell. At first I was worried that there was an electrical fire somewhere in the walls of the workshop/chicken coop/garage area. It quickly became apparent it was the dog!
Just to be sure I wasn't losing my mind, I asked hubby to confirm that this acrid smell seemed to be coming from our dog...he concurred and we quickly banished her from the house to our enclosed carport until I could determine how to deal with her. It was at this time that I began to suspect that a skunk was responsible.
A quick internet search confirmed my fears and offered a variety of solutions. I chose one that appeared on several sites and for which I had the ingredients. I mixed a quart of peroxide, a 1/4 cup of baking soda and a generous tablespoon of Dawn dish detergent in an open container. I approached Miss Stinky and quickly determined that the spray had hit her chest and front legs (and not her face, thankfully, as I read that could have left her blind for up to two days). I took the concoction and proceeded to rub it in and lather it all over the affected area...the smell disappeared almost immediately! Lucky for her this worked so quickly, otherwise she was getting rinsed with the cold water hose outside. I took her inside to the bath to complete the washing process with warm water and a hand shower. And now, the only smell I have to endure is wet dog!
I'm exhausted an it's not even 9am yet!
